How to find GST number from PAN
GST number search by PAN, and PAN search by GST number, from the same box. All from the public GST records.
Enter the 10 digit PAN of the company in the box above and every GST number raised on the same comes back at once, state wise, since a GSTIN is always built on the PAN standing behind it. The table given below sets out both the directions in which this search can be run.
| What you have | What to enter above | What you will get |
|---|---|---|
| PAN of a company | The 10 digits PAN | All the GSTINs on that PAN, state wise with status |
| A GST number | The 15 digits GSTIN | The PAN inside it, shown instantly |
No records need to be checked for the reverse direction, since the PAN sits inside the GSTIN itself and is simply read out from the same. In case that GST number is also to be checked for its registration status, this can be done with our GST verification tool.
How a GST number contains the PAN inside it
Every GSTIN has 15 characters and each part has a meaning. Type or paste any GSTIN below and it will be broken into its five parts instantly.
- 29State Code
- GST registration taken in Karnataka
- AABCG1234LPAN
- The 10 characters PAN of the business sits here, from the 3rd to the 12th character
- 1Entity Number
- Serial of the registrations taken on the same PAN within the state
- ZDefault Letter
- Kept as Z by default for all taxpayers
- 5Check Digit
- Computed from the first 14 characters to catch typing mistakes
The breakdown given above gets generated live from whatever GSTIN is typed in, and every GST number in the country follows this very structure, since the same has been laid down by the GST department. That is also why the PAN of any company can be read off its GST number without checking a single record, as the number already carries the same inside it.
Why one PAN can have many GST numbers
GST registration is state wise. The PAN stays the same, the state code and the entity number change.
GST registration is taken state wise and not once for the whole country, so a business supplying goods or services from more than one state carries a separate GSTIN in each of those states, all raised on the very same PAN. The table below sets out what changes between such numbers and what stays fixed.
| GSTIN | State | Same PAN inside |
|---|---|---|
| 29AABCG1234L1Z5 | Karnataka (29) | AABCG1234L |
| 27AABCG1234L1ZQ | Maharashtra (27) | AABCG1234L |
| 33AABCG1234L1ZR | Tamil Nadu (33) | AABCG1234L |
This is the reason why the PAN to GST search shows a list and not a single number. Each GSTIN in the list is a separate registration with its own status and its own filings. In case the company behind the PAN is to be identified along with its registration details, the CIN can be traced from our CIN number search page.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about PAN to GST and GST to PAN.
Enter the 10 digits PAN from the PAN card of the company in the search box given above. All the GST numbers which have been taken on that PAN will come up state wise along with the registration status of each one. This is possible since every GSTIN is built on the PAN itself, and hence one PAN leads to all the GST registrations of that person or company across India.
