How to verify a GST number
Paste the 15 digits GSTIN above. The structure check is instant and it catches most of the fake numbers.
Enter the 15 digits GST number in the box above and press Verify. The structure of the same is checked first, that is the state code at the start, the PAN sitting inside it and the check digit at the end. In case a number fails this check, then it is not a GSTIN at all and nothing further needs to be seen in it. If the number is in order, then the state, the PAN, the legal name, the trade name and the registration status are all shown to you instantly.
And in case no GST number is with you to begin with, there is no need to worry over it. The same tool also traces a GSTIN from the name of the company or the LLP, from a CIN, or from an LLPIN, each on a tab of its own above the box.
Before any payment reaches a new vendor, it is worth verifying the GST number first. In case the registration of the vendor stands cancelled or suspended, the input tax credit on that purchase can be denied, and the whole of the GST amount becomes a cost. Checking the number takes only a few seconds, and it saves this trouble later.
Search GST number by company or LLP name
No GSTIN in hand? Start from the name of the company or the LLP instead.
The GST number of a company or an LLP can also be traced from its name. For this, choose the name search tab above and type the legal name or the trade name of the business, and the matching registrations along with the state of each one will be shown. In case the GST number of a company is needed quickly, the same is generally printed on its invoices, its quotations and its website too. Any number found in this manner can be pasted back in the first tab and checked in a few seconds.
How to find the GST number from a CIN
A CIN and a GSTIN are two different numbers, and the company name is the bridge that connects them.
Say the only thing in your hands is the CIN of a company, something like U72200KA2013PTC097389, and what you are after is its GST number, which the CIN on its own will never give you, since all 21 of its characters go towards the record of that company with the Registrar and GST does not figure anywhere among them. The way in, then, is the company itself. We take the CIN, open up the company standing behind it from the MCA records, read off its PAN and look up whichever GST numbers have been raised on the same, which is why a business working across four states throws up four GSTINs in this manner, one for each of them, even as the single PAN sitting under all four stays exactly the same throughout.
A CIN and a GSTIN are best kept apart in the mind, as such, since the two exist for altogether separate purposes and come from separate offices. Exactly where the two part ways is set out in the table given below.
| CIN | GSTIN | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 21 characters | 15 characters |
| Given by | Registrar of Companies (MCA) | The GST department |
| How many per company | One | One in each state of registration |
| Carries the PAN | No | Yes, from the 3rd to the 12th character |
For the reverse case, where a CIN has to be found from a GST number, our CIN number search takes the PAN out of the GSTIN and traces the company from there.
How to find the GST number of an LLP
An LLP is reached the same way as a company, through its PAN.
An LLP too carries a PAN of its own, and its GST registration rests on that very PAN, in just the way a company's registration does. What the Registrar gives it, instead, is an LLPIN, and this number, much like a CIN, holds nothing about GST within it as such, so the GST of an LLP is reached only through the PAN, never through the LLPIN. In case one GSTIN of the LLP is already available with you, then the PAN is simply lifted out of characters three to twelve of the same and dropped into our PAN to GST search, which then lists every GST registration of the LLP, state by state.
Company details by GST number
What the registration record of a GSTIN reveals about the business behind it.
A good deal about a business can, as such, be read off the registration record sitting behind its GSTIN, and what each part of that record tells you is set out in the table given below. There is no separate line for the owner as such, though in the case of a proprietorship the legal name is itself the name of the proprietor. And in case the business happens to be a company registered with MCA, then the CIN and the full company profile can be traced from our CIN number search page.
| Detail | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Legal name | The name in which the registration stands |
| Trade name | The brand name under which the business runs |
| Status | Active, cancelled or suspended |
| Type of registration | Regular, composition, casual or non resident |
| State and date | Where and when the registration was taken |
| PAN | Sits inside the GSTIN, from the 3rd to the 12th character |
