GST Number Verification

Verify any GSTIN, or find a GST number from the company name, a CIN or an LLPIN. The structure, the state and the PAN inside a number are checked for you instantly.

How to verify a GST number

Paste the 15 digits GSTIN above. The instant structure check catches typing errors and numbers which cannot be valid GSTINs.

Enter the 15 digits GST number in the box above and press Verify. The structure of the same is checked first, that is the state code at the start, the PAN sitting inside it and the check digit at the end. In case a number fails this check, it is either mistyped or structurally invalid. Passing the structure check is not proof of registration; where a matching record is available, the legal name, the trade name and the recorded registration status are shown separately.

And in case no GST number is with you to begin with, there is no need to worry over it. The same tool also traces a GSTIN from the name of the company or the LLP, from a CIN, or from an LLPIN, each on a tab of its own above the box.

Before any payment reaches a new vendor, it is worth checking the GST number and the name on the registration. This is only one part of the check: input tax credit is subject to the invoice, receipt, return and other conditions under GST law, and the status shown here does not decide eligibility on its own.

How to find the GST number from a CIN

A CIN and a GSTIN are two different numbers, and the company name is the bridge that connects them.

Say the only thing in your hands is the CIN of a company, something like U72200KA2013PTC097389, and what you are after is its GST number, which the CIN on its own will never give you, since all 21 of its characters go towards the record of that company with the Registrar and GST does not figure anywhere among them. The way in, then, is the company itself. We take the CIN, open up the company standing behind it from the MCA records, read off its PAN and look up whichever GST numbers have been raised on the same, which is why a business working across four states throws up four GSTINs in this manner, one for each of them, even as the single PAN sitting under all four stays exactly the same throughout.

A CIN and a GSTIN are best kept apart in the mind, as such, since the two exist for altogether separate purposes and come from separate offices. Exactly where the two part ways is set out in the table given below.

For the reverse case, where a CIN has to be found from a GST number, our CIN number search takes the PAN out of the GSTIN and traces the company from there.

How to find the GST number of an LLP

An LLP is reached the same way as a company, through its PAN.

An LLP too carries a PAN of its own, and its GST registration rests on that very PAN, in just the way a company's registration does. What the Registrar gives it, instead, is an LLPIN, and this number, much like a CIN, holds nothing about GST within it as such, so the GST of an LLP is reached only through the PAN, never through the LLPIN. In case one GSTIN of the LLP is already available with you, then the PAN is simply lifted out of characters three to twelve of the same and dropped into our PAN to GST search, which then lists every GST registration of the LLP, state by state.

Company details by GST number

What the registration record of a GSTIN reveals about the business behind it.

A good deal about a business can, as such, be read off the registration record sitting behind its GSTIN, and what each part of that record tells you is set out in the table given below. There is no separate line for the owner as such, though in the case of a proprietorship the legal name is itself the name of the proprietor. And in case the business happens to be a company registered with MCA, then the CIN and the full company profile can be traced from our CIN number search page.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about GST verification.

How do I verify a GST number?

Paste the 15 digits GSTIN in the search box given above and the structure of the same is checked at once, that is the state code, the PAN inside it and the check digit at the end. The legal name, the trade name and the present status of the taxpayer are also shown along with the structure result.

How to find a company's GST number by its name?

Choose the name search tab above and type the name of the company, and the matching registrations along with the state of each one will come up. In case the GST number of a company is needed quickly, the same is generally printed on its invoices and its website too. And in case the PAN of the company is already available with you, then all the GST numbers taken on that PAN can be found at once with our PAN to GST search.

What details can I get from a GSTIN?

From the GST records you get the legal name of the business, the trade name, the type of the registration, the state, the date of registration and the present status. The PAN of the business also sits inside the GSTIN itself, from the 3rd character to the 12th character. The filing history of the returns can also be seen on the GST portal.

How to check who owns a GST number?

There is no separate owner field in the GST record as such, the legal name shown against the GSTIN being simply the name in which the registration stands. In case of a proprietorship, that legal name is the name of the proprietor himself. And in case of a company or an LLP, the legal name is the name of the entity, while the directors or the partners behind it can be checked from the MCA records.

What is a GSTIN?

GSTIN means Goods and Services Tax Identification Number. It is a 15 digits number which is allotted to every taxpayer registered under GST. In this number the first 2 digits are the state code, the next 10 characters are the PAN of the taxpayer, the 13th character is the entity number, the 14th one is kept as Z and the last one is a check digit.

Why should a GST number be verified before dealing with a vendor?

Mainly because the input tax credit depends on it. In case the registration of the vendor stands cancelled and the tax is still paid to him, then the credit of that tax can be denied to you, and the whole of the GST amount then turns into a cost. So verifying the number before the first payment is made is the simplest way to avoid this trouble.

Is this GST verification free?

Yes, it is completely free and no signup is required, and there is no cap on how many GST numbers you check.

Can we get the GST number from a CIN number?

No, not directly, since a CIN and a GSTIN come from separate offices for separate purposes. Our CIN to GST tab opens the company behind the CIN and pulls whatever GST registrations sit on its PAN, the same as explained above.

Is a CIN the same as a GSTIN?

No, not really. The two are given by altogether different authorities for different purposes, a company keeping one CIN for life while it can hold several GSTINs at the same time. The length, the issuer and an example of each is what the comparison above sets out.

How to find the GST number of an LLP?

Through the PAN of the LLP, not the LLPIN, using our PAN to GST search as explained above.
